The PIER Conference has finished for another successful year. We had a very interesting selection of plenary sessions and workshops, along with some brilliant poster presentations, which hopefully gave every one of our 250 attendees something to take home with them. All the presentations and posters are now available to view on the Conference pages, so please do have a look at your leisure. We are very excited to see you all again in October 2025 for our 10th anniversary of PIER and the PIER Conference. We have some exciting things planned, which we will let you know more about in the New Year...

Make The Airway Safe Team Annual ConferenceStudy day for doctors, nurses and ODPs, from anaesthetics, ITU, ENT, paediatrics, neonates, ED about safely managing a difficult airway in a child. I am keen to update you on some exciting education opportunities coming up for the region, both within the Wessex Children’s & Young Adults Palliative Care Network, and from the Strategic Clinical Networks across the South West and South East. I have listed these below. Due to holidays and faculty availability we have had to move our quarterly forum meeting to 6th June and the next Journal club to 17th July. There are still spaces for the foundation study day and ACP training days in September booked via our PIER site here https://www.piernetwork.org/wcyapcn.html. Please see the email further below pertaining to the wider education approach being developed between the South West and South East teams. This will form the backdrop for the work we do in Wessex. Our training in Wessex will aim to focus on the practical and locally relevant aspects of the South of England approach. Please do make use of these resources as they will only be available whilst funding lasts! This includes two fantastic online resources. The first is an ‘introduction course’, the second is an ‘enhanced’ course. Information can be found on the two courses here: Home | International Children's Palliative Care Network: elearning (elearnicpcn.org). These are interaction rich courses and will be an excellent opportunity for staff as neonates make up a greater proportion of the PEoLC work moving forwards. Masterclasses The South West team are offering a range of training courses and forum gatherings to learn and share. These are very high quality training days and applicable across the region. See information in the email below and attachments. Moodle Platform Many of you I have had the pleasure of ‘seeing’ on the Opioids course, hosted on the moodle platform. This is being expanded to exclude some new and exciting modules from advance care planning, syringe driver training, verification of death and more. Based on the opioids course, this is extremely well put together and helps staff to meet their mandatory training requirements as well as palliative care competencies. More information to come soon. Email from South of England Team: As part of our South of England Education offer for our combined Paediatric Palliative Care (PPC) workforce funded as a region, I am pleased to report an anticipated launch date of June 24’ for our online virtual platform; all details on how to join the modules will be shared at this time.
To meet all learning styles and to compliment the online presence we are also offering a comprehensive programme of in person masterclasses covered in the attached document. This was previously shared with you at the start of this month; therefore, some dates have now taken place but many remain and our event day has since been postponed however we plan to re-engage with you all on our next steps surrounding this event soon. A gentle reminder that these masterclasses are available to our regional and neighbouring workforce, currently these are the only dates we are able to offer the face-to-face element of the training strategy; we would therefore actively encourage applications as soon as possible to secure a place. Drawing your attention to the Masterclass in Advanced Communication Skills on complex decision making and ethics in paediatric palliative care taking place next Thursday in Bristol, details of this day attached above; to secure your place please click here; CLICK HERE Please can I ask for your support in the dissemination of these documents to enable them to land with our systems and onto our teams on the ground; we have also made sure we have circulated via our clinical contact lists available to us at region. If you have any questions on above, please come back to me and I look forward to providing an update on our launch in June to support our combined investment to our incredible paediatric palliative care workforce. We would like to invite you to a practical SONeT transport study day, which will include:

We have had some brilliant submissions from all members of the MDT in the past few years, and we know this year will be no exception! All information about the conference, booking tickets, pricing, abstract submissions and more is available on the conference website. Just click below... If you are stepping up into your first registrar post or stepping back from a period of time out of training (maternity leave, research, travelling etc) then join us on the 15th July for the Step up/Step back study day at UHS. The course provides a safe, protected environment to discuss the anxieties many trainees experience in moving on to a new step in their careers, and to practice some of the clinical skills involved in leading the management of acutely unwell children and neonates. The Step Up/Step Back course utilises high fidelity simulation to give trainees the experience of managing the acute presentations of a variety of paediatric and neonatal conditions, such as Sepsis, Extreme Premature Delivery, Seizures, HIE and neonatal ventilation. The course also contains lectures covering generic registrar skills, managing ward wounds and junior staff, multitasking, child protection and other topics. Register for your place by going to the Step up/Step back page in the trainees section.
Please be advised that there has been an increase in the number of children with acute pertussis (whooping cough) in the region, including one recent death in PICU. These cases appear to be more common in young children who did not receive in-utero vaccination.
A guideline from the South Thames Retrieval Service (STRS - based at the Evelina) is included below with recommendation for early escalation to PICU if children with pertussis are showing an increased or rising WCC due to the recognised high risk of morbidity and mortality from leucocytosis and organ failure. Public health recommendations are also in place for paediatric staff who work with pregnant women, neonates or infants to consider the need for booster vaccination to prevent nosocomial spread. Please discuss this with your local occupational health department.
Please see the alert below from the Wessex & Thames Valley Paediatric Critical Care Network
The Thames Valley and Wessex Paediatric Critical Care Network have finalised a guideline pathway for the management of children with difficult IV access. This pathway offers suggestions for how to escalate issues with IV access based on the clinical need along with options for vein-finding adjuncts which may be of help. The pathway has space to be personalised for your Trust with contact numbers etc to make management of this issue easier in acute situations. This pathway will be supported by a difficult IV access practical study day which will be available later in the year. Find the new pathway here - www.piernetwork.org/DIVA Tickets are now available for the upcoming PREMIER Conference being held at Hope Church, Winchester. The programme has also been released - see below. There are tonnes of learning opportunities to be had at this exciting 2 day Paediatric Emergency Medicine Conference.
