Patient Safety First Projects

​Health Education Wessex run a one-day masterclass on patient safety several times a year. This course is open to all healthcare professionals and is compulsory for all ST1 trainees.

The masterclass includes:

• dealing with common themes of teamwork, communication, leadership and professionalism
• human factors in clinical error
• risk awareness in specific specialties.

After attending a class, you are encouraged to undertake your own patient safety project using improvement methodology (PDSA cycles). A paediatric patient safety ‘champion’ will be your mentor and all projects are presented orally or by poster at an annual conference in July. These projects provide a rich source of ideas for addressing common safety issues.
