This course provides a basic introduction in the delivery and understanding of caring for the child/young person who is undergoing treatment for a cancer diagnosis, and their family.
Who is the course suitable for? Registered paediatric nurses who, as part of their role, are expected to care for children and young people with a cancer diagnosis but have no or limited experience of this patient group.
Course aims and learning outcomes This course aims to provide you with the opportunity to explore and understand fundamental nursing implications and care related to working with children and young people with a cancer diagnosis. By the end of this course you will be able to:
explain what cancer is and why it occurs in children
describe why central lines are used in the treatment of children with cancer and the care associated with these venous access devices
understand the overview of different therapies used in treating childhood cancer
describe key side effects experienced by patients being treated for childhood cancer
understand the information that is shared with children, young people and their families regarding their treatment and to support them through the treatment.
On completion of the course you should gain a fundamental knowledge of key care elements involved in caring for patients and their families. You will also be given the opportunity to expand this knowledge in practice through the use of competencies which can be signed off by the lead cancer nurse/POON.

Paediatric Oncology Advanced Study Day
This course provides an insight into new and complex elements of nursing involved in delivering care for children and young people who are undergoing treatment for a cancer diagnosis and their families.
Who is the course suitable for? Registered staff who, as part of their role, are expected to care for children and young people with a cancer diagnosis. You should already have a good level of experience and knowledge in delivering basic care to this patient group. You must also have attended or completed foundation level training in relation to paediatric oncology care.
Course aims and learning outcomes This course aims to provide you with the opportunity to explore and understand more advanced nursing implications and care related to working with children or young people with a cancer diagnosis. By the end of this course, you will be able to:
understand the impact of genetics on childhood cancer
gain a greater insight in to the complex issues surrounding childhood cancer
describe some of the more complex, but key clinical emergencies that can occur following treatment for a childhood cancer diagnosis, how they impact of the patient and family and how this is treated and managed
identify and understand new therapies and trials being introduced.
On completion of the course, you should have built on your current knowledge of the care involved in treating patients with a childhood cancer.

Paediatric Oncology Course Module 1: Fundamentals of Care
This is a 6 day taught programme (7th, 10th, 21st, 28th March, 4th, 7th April 2021. Assessment Day: 9th May) Content:
The module focuses on the knowledge and skills required by nurses and AHP's who care for children with oncological and malignant haematological conditions.
The module will cover diagnostics, treatment and management of childhood cancers, as well as genetic factors that influence treatment.
Supportive care management will also be covered.
Assessment Work based competencies and 20 minute oral presentation
Booking Once you have booked on you will be emailed an application form. Please state if you wish to gain academic credit for the module as you will have to apply to the University of Southampton for the credits. You will be able to complete the module at Level 6 or Level 7.

Paediatric Oncology Course Module 2: Continuation of Care
This is a 6 day taught programme (6th, 7th, 16th, 20th, 23rd, 30th June and assignment 29th July)
Content:The module is delivered by Southampton Children’s Hospital. The module is designed to meet the standards of a 20 credit degree or masters level module. For advice APEL and work based learning modules please contact your course facilitator. Module aims are to facilitate the personal and professional development of the registered nurse or health care professional within the speciality of paediatric oncology and haematology. Learning outcomes include developing an analytical and critical approach to the concepts and evidence based practice within paediatric oncology nursing. The intention is that successful completion of your studies will enhance your ability to safely and competently care infants, children and young people with a wide range of health issues requiring a high level of oncology care.
