Children's Trauma Training Day

This one day course has been designed to improve the team performance and care of injured children in Wessex. It is a multi-disciplinary and specialty team training day. Each hospital in the area submits a complete trauma team to attend the day so they can learn and practice new skills together. The afternoon involves rotating through four different simulated trauma scenarios using real child actors as the patients. The children are thoroughly briefed on the scenario, applied with make-up for relevant injuries and supported by a play therapy team.

Who is the course suitable for
  • Any member of the trauma team
  • Four teams per course, seven to eight people per team
Each team should have at least:
  • one emergency department doctor (ideally two)
  • one paediatrician or trainee
  • one anaesthetist or intensivist
  • two emergency department nurses.
  • one ODP or ICU technician, this depends on the staff that would attend a paediatric trauma call at that hospital.

Course aims and learning outcomes
This course aims to cover the following topics:
  • Wessex Trauma Network children’s pathways and protocols
  • airway management and anaesthesia
  • damage control resuscitation and surgery
  • burns
  • human factors and team performance
  • chest injuries.
This is achieved by interactive paediatric trauma case based discussions and full immersion simulations of paediatric trauma calls.

By the end of this course you will be able to:
  • manage critically injured children in their emergency department
  • understand how human factors impede performance and how to get the most out of the team
  • resuscitate and transfer children time critical injuries
  • be familiar with the regional children’s trauma guidelines and how to find them in an emergency

On successful completion of the course you will receive PIER certification.
