Our strategy towards achieving this is aligned to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) mission statement “to transform child health through knowledge, innovation and expertise”.
We offer a range of teaching methods, including local point of care training to deliver bespoke, interactive, simulation based experiences as well as knowledge based learning where appropriate. Our course portfolio ranges from paediatric clinical skills and care pathways to essential transferable skills such as teamwork. Courses are created in partnership with our paediatric network, Health Education Wessex and the University of Southampton. |

CACTUS - Children's ACuTe UltraSound

Course aims
This course is an introduction to acute point-of-care ultrasound in paediatrics. Both lectures and hands-on practice are used to equip delegates with the skills to start their training towards achieving PICS accredited competence in acute ultrasound in children. Full details of the accreditation process will be explained on the course
Course content
This introductory course covers the basic principles and physics that underpin ultrasonography, moving on to covering the specifics of focused abdominal, heart and lung imaging. Every candidate will get supervised practice scanning live volunteers of varying ages.

The QiS Paediatric Critical Care Level 1 Nursing Competencies have been developed from the RCPCH Time To Move On document (2012) and the recognition that paediatric critical care needs to be effectively provided in the ward environment, as well as in designated areas or hospitals.
This course is designed for registered nurses post preceptorship.
Two-day virtual course - deepen knowledge and understanding to support nursing care of L1 PCC patients including:
- physiology of acute illness in children
- management of common presentations
- interpretation of investigations
- stabilisation of critically ill children
- Tracheostomy care, chest drains, respiratory support and preparing for intubation
Completion of a nursing skills competencies workbook aligned with PCCS National nursing competencies 2023, with the support of local education teams within 12 months of starting the course.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a technique to facilitate behaviour change by drawing out a patient’s own motivations and goals, rather than imposing those of the health professional.
- By placing greater importance on the patient’s autonomy, MI techniques out perform traditional advice-giving in terms of improving health behaviours and adherence to recommendations.
- Effects persist even when MI is used in brief consultations - such as the few minutes in the clinic setting.
- MI is easily adapted for use by all health care professionals and non-clinicians, such as local patient and peer support groups.

This study day for paediatric and adult MDTs involved in looking after young people with kidney disease. The day will cover some of the more complex renal conditions moving to adult services.
Advances in medical care have led to the many more paediatric kidney patients surviving into adulthood with conditions that not so long ago would probably have been fatal in childhood. Whilst clearly very good news it can lead to a daunting experience for the MDT as they provide care for patients with conditions with which they are unfamiliar. This is in addition to the well documented challenges that the patient and family face as they move into adult care.
The study day will be an opportunity to review some of these renal conditions, share examples of good practice and resources that are working across the country and identify areas that require additional resource development.

- understand the information that is shared with children, young people and their families regarding their treatment and to support them through the treatment.
On completion of the course you should gain a fundamental knowledge of key care elements involved in caring for patients and their families.
